8 Ways moms can find support

Many mothers have a similar sense of aloneness and loneliness these days, with all the hustle and bustle and mobility in our society. But the good news is that there really are plenty of simple but effective ways to connect with other mothers.

Mom friends

  1. Look for mothers clubs in your area. You can find out about them in local parent/family newspapers, or by asking preschool teachers. There are also directories on the internet of national organizations with local chapters, and groups like as MomsClubParents Without Partners and this directory of mothers’ clubs in California.
  2. If it feels comfortable for you, try to get involved with your child’s school or preschool.
  3. Many areas have informal mommy/baby groups, playgroups, etc. You could find out by asking around, or put up a little flyer and try to organize your own.
  4. If you’re so inclined, religious organizations often are ways to connect with other parents.
  5. Ask your pediatrician for ideas.
  6. Many areas have a parent hotline with community resources, as well as telephone support.
  7. Go online. There are many great websites with strong communities of other mothers. Check out the message boards here on the SheKnows.com.
  8. Think about connecting with relatives who are mothers.
