Trendspotting with Jill Laine: Pretty pastels

Hello SK Style watchers! What makes this spring and summer so different from other seasons is that it’s been all about color, lots of color, and huge variations in color. From colorblocking to neons to pastels, color runs the gamut this season, and the ways to wear it are endless! One trend in color that’s so pretty and easy to wear is pastels, which is why it’s my pick as favorite trend of the week!

Fresh for summer

Hello SK Style watchers! What makes this spring and summer so different from other seasons is that it’s been all about color, lots of color, and huge variations in color. From colorblocking to neons to pastels, color runs the gamut this season, and the ways to wear it are endless! One trend in color that’s so pretty and easy to wear is pastels, which is why it’s my pick as favorite trend of the week!

Today I want to give you three fresh ways to take this trend from demure to daring, depending on your mood.

Our pick: Ted Baker Birdie Print Top, $165, Ted Baker.com

Demure

For this soft and sweet look, pair your pastels with neutrals such as gray, nude and navy. Just because it’s demure doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Use small prints to keep this look interesting and lively. Experiment with adding some florals or small animal figure prints such as birds or horses. Top it off with some metallic sandals and delicate jewelry for a look that is tres chic!

Darling

When I think of pastels, I think of being at the beach, and all the natural hues that live together there. Create your own beach darling look by layering your pastels with each other. It’s colorblocking but in a soft and subdued way. Mixing these light, soft colors is virtually fool proof, because these all mix and match in nature! Finish your look with some abalone or shell jewelry for pastel perfection.

Our pick: Haute Hippie Chevron Mini Skirt, $495, Nordstrom.com

Daring

Bar none, pairing your pastels with bold color is sheer gorgeousness! There are two ways to do this look. The first is to choose a pale pastel and bright color in the same color family, such as aqua and electric blue. Or, if you’re feeling especially bold, mix your pastel with an opposing color: pale yellow with purple, pastel blue with orange, a pinch of peach with red. With these super bright, even neon colors, make sure your pastels are very light and pale. My final piece of style advice is to finish this look with neutrals such as gold, gray or tan to keep your daring ‘do anchored and polished.
