Helping your child pick a first day outfit

Fashionably speaking, the first day of school is the most important day of the year for your child. It’s her chance to show everyone how much her style has improved over the summer. If she’s going to a new school, it’s her only chance to make a good first impression. Help her make sure all eyes on are on her (for a good reason!) by following our tips for helping her choose her outfit for the first day of school.

Know the rules

No one wants to spend the first day of school dressed in a T-shirt from the principal’s office. Avoid this situation by studying the dress code before you go shopping for school clothes. Make sure everything you buy is within the limits and you’ll have no issues.

Make a statement

The first day of school is all about making a good first impression, and you can’t do that if you blend into the background. Make a statement with your first-day outfit by picking a bold color, a bright pattern or funky texture (but not all of the above) when you choose an outfit.

Wear something new

We all hold our heads a little higher when we wear a new outfit. Give that confidence to your kids by making sure they show up to school on the first day wearing something brand new. You may not have the money to splurge on a whole new wardrobe, but try and swing at least one new outfit. Keep it new — once you wear it out (even just to a movie) it loses its power, so hide it from her until the big day if you have to.

Dress comfortably

The first day of school is stressful enough without throwing in an outfit that’s uncomfortable. You don’t want her to spend the whole day tugging on a too-tight outfit or limping because her heels are too high. Make sure she looks good, but help her come up with an outfit that’s functional, too.

Layer it up

It’s hard enough to predict what the weather outside will be like on the first day of school — you can forget guessing what it will be like inside the school. Will it be hot and stuffy from being closed up all summer, or will it be freezing cold because the air conditioner is working overtime to make up for its summer vacation? She won’t know until she gets there, so send her prepared for either scenario by sending her in layers. Whe should wear two different shirts and top it off with a cardigan so she can bundle up if it’s chilly and remove layers if it’s warm.

Study the style

There’s no bigger offense that showing up the first day in (gasp!) last year’s styles. Spend some time studying up on current trends before you shop for back-to-school clothes.

Quick Tip

Before you go shopping for a new outfit, spend time looking at magazines and websites to figure out what look she’s going for.
