As the new year hits many families consider buying a new family car. Here's how to make the right choice. family-car.jpgKnow your cars. The first thing to do is research. Edmunds.com has an excellent car buying section for women that covers issues like driving and pregnancy and how to find the perfect car if you have kids. The Consumer Reports car blog is another great resource. Leave the baby at home: Car shopping is stressful. Car shopping with a baby in tow is stressful times 50. Leave him with grandma for the day. BUT do take along his car seat. When test driving, also test out the car seat. If it's a hassle to get a car seat into the car then it's not the car for you. Look for safety: Specifically look for child safety features like noise alerts when someone is behind your car, child safety locks, automatic windows that lock so your little one can't mess with it, and the proper car harnesses. Think ease of use: For loading and unloading both baby and groceries sliding doors can be a life saver. Think long term: Your baby is tiny now but if you're planning on keeping this car for a while look to the future. Will his toddler seat fit? What if you have another baby -- will two car seats fit in the back seat? Carpooling kids to and from ballet (yikes -- make sure that there's room).
