I've seen parents absolutely flip out because their baby seemingly can't see well. Most of the time it's not the baby. First of all, absolutely flipping out over baby issues is par for course. If you were a perfectly calm and content mama, I'd have to wonder if you're a robot mama. (uh oh Stepford mama). However, when it comes to your baby's vision, parents often worry about the wrong things. For example. Most babies appear to NOT focus on their baby mobile above the crib. This has nothing to do with vision. It normally has to do with where you hung the mobile. Baby mobiles tend to come with very little string, but parents just hang it as is. The problem is that tiny babies can't focus very far as a rule. Newborns focus best on objects that are no more than 14 or so inches away. Additionally babies rarely look up. They like to look side to side - if you hang the mobile low, close, and to the side, your baby will enjoy it. Lastly, as much as we as parents adore brightly colored baby objects, like mobiles, studies show that our babies prefer black and white over color for the first few months. They also enjoy light, which may be why your baby will stare at the lamp, and ignore the mobile. So, if mobile fun, doesn't seem like your baby's idea of a good time, it's most likely nothing to worry about.
