Wow, in yet another reason not to smoke while pregnant news, a recent study find that mamas who smoke Mothers during pregnancy may be increasing the risks that their kids will develop psychotic symptoms as teenagers. Yikes. The study, conducted by four British universities studied and interviewed 6,356 kids, looking specifically for psychotic-like symptoms such as hallucinations or delusions. Around 11% of these kids did have psychotic symptoms, and researchers found that around 19% had mothers who smoked during pregnancy. Stanley Zammit, a psychiatrist at Cardiff University's School of Medicine says, "The more the mothers smoked, the more likely their children were to have psychotic symptoms." Zammit further notes that, "We can estimate that about 20 percent of adolescents in this cohort would not have developed psychotic symptoms if their mothers had not smoked." Quitting smoking is hard, but pregnant women have awesome success rates with quitting so if you're preggers, that's in your favor. Plus if you quit, your kids will be less likely to smoke later on.
