Both of these baby-minded holidays are close in scope, especially as folic acid can help prevent baby birth defects. We discuss folic acid a lot here, but when something is so healthy for you and your baby, well, it's always worth another look. What is folic acid? Folic acid is a B-vitamin that all women in their childbearing years need to take. Folic acid is necessary for proper cell growth and can help prevent from 50% up to 70% of serious birth defects of the brain and spine. Newer research even suggests that folic acid may prevent premature birth and heart defects. How much folic acid do you need? Experts currently recommend that all women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant take 400 micrograms of synthetic folic acid daily. Remember, about half of pregnancies are unplanned surprises, so if you're not even planning a pregnancy, but are old enough to become pregnant, then folic acid is a must. How to get enough folic acid? Folic acid is available in food sources like fortified grains, pastas, or breakfast cereals, but keep in mind that The National Council on Folic Acid notes, "Although all enriched cereals and grain products in the U.S. are fortified with the B-vitamin folic acid, only one-third of U.S. women of childbearing age consume the recommended amount.
