The other day in why do babies smell so delicious, I noted the following...
Babies have zero sweat - while some people (even when they’re sweaty) smell fab to us, babies don’t have sweat glands that have kicked into gear yet. No sweat means no possibility for unappealing sweaty odor. Sweat glands usually start becoming active around puberty so until then your little one has a nicer scent.
I should have been more clear about baby sweat and for this I apologize. Specifically, it's not that babies don't sweat, it's that their sweat glands aren't the same as people who have been through puberty. I'm bringing this up because I recently saw an article about how odd smells can indicate a health problem with your baby. While babies of course get hot and can perspire, baby sweat technically shouldn't smell bad because again, their sweat glands aren't the same as the active sweat glands you find in older kids, teens and adult. Now, when do weird or bad baby smells indicate a problem? There are many instances when a weird or bad baby smell may indicate a health problem. For example, a musty odor can mean a rare but serious condition called Phenylketonuria. A scent of maple syrup may mean maple syrup urine disease a genetic disorder. A slightly sour scent is also common and can be caused by a recent spit-up incident or the fact that baby sweat, food, milk, or dirt is easily trapped in the cute (but chubby) folds of skin most infants have. Any sour smell that cleans up with warm water is nothing to worry about. That milky smell will sadly vanish when your baby moves on to more solid foods and quits drinking so much milk.
