Past Tony winners Anika Noni Rose and Matthew Broderick announced the 2011 Tony Awards nominees this morning, May 3. Hollywood players like Al Pacino, Edie Falco, Vanessa Redgrave, Billy Crudup, John Benjamin Hickey, Tammy Blanchard, Ellen Barkin, John Larroquette, Judith Light, Bobby Cannavale and Patti LuPone made the grade on stage to land nominations. Book of Mormon, from South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, leads the way with 14 nominations.
Anika Noni Rose and Matthew Broderick revealed the 2011 Tony Award nominees live from the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in New York City this morning. While the 65th annual Tony nom list is not quite the Hollywood “it” list it was last year, it’s clear Hollywood stars still have their fingers on the Broadway pulse.
South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone and their collaborator Robert Lopez have the most to celebrate this morning. Their musical Book of Mormon led with 14 nominations. Book of Mormon will battle Catch Me If You Can, The Scottsboro Boys and Sister Act for the big one, Best Musical, and is also in contention for original score, costume design, direction and several actor noms.
The Scottsboro Boys followed Book of Mormon with 12 Tony nominations overall. Anything Goes trailed with nine noms. Daniel Radcliffe’s musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying nabbed eight nods, including noms for John Larroquette and Tammy Blanchard, but none for the Harry Potter star.
Al Pacino’s The Merchant of Venice is the most-nominated play this year, with seven nominations, including noms for Al Pacino and costar Lily Rabe.

The American Theatre Wing’s 65th Annual Antoinette Perry “Tony” Awards, which are presented by the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing, will air on CBS on Sunday, June 12 at 8 p.m. The event takes place at the Beacon Theatre and will be followed by the invite-only Tony Gala at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.
