Kim Kardashian won’t return ring to “Indian giver” says mom

Kris Jenner says Kim Kardashian will not be returning her mega-expensive engagement ring — but it’s the way she put it that is really getting her in hot water.

Will Kim Kardashian keep her engagement ring? That’s been the question on everyone’s mind since the star confirmed her split from Kris Humphries just 72 days after their lavish wedding. Now her mom Kris Jenner says Kim is keeping the bauble — but it’s the way she said it that is really getting her in hot water.

While promoting her memoir Kris Jenner and All Things Kardashian on Good Morning America, Jenner said, “It’s a gift — you keep a gift. I hate an Indian giver.”

The racially-charged phrase “Indian giver” refers to a person who gives a gift then demands it back — and understandably, native Americans bristle at the sound of it.

“Once again American Indians and Alaska Natives have been misrepresented by a single misinformed statement,” said National Congress of American Indians Executive Director Jacqueline Johnson Pata. “Native American people serve in our country’s military at disproportionate rates, are respected business leaders, citizens of the United States, members of Congress, professional athletes, musicians, teachers and active participants in civic life.”

“The phrase ‘Indian giving’ is wrong and hurtful. The cultural values of Native Americans are based on giving unconditionally and empowering those around them. Instead this cultural value is forgotten when negative stereotyping of Native people occurs.”

“November is Native American Heritage Month and this moment calls for a reflection on the contributions of America’s first peoples to this great country. There are over five million US citizens identified as American Indians or Alaska Natives and 565 federally recognized tribal nations. This November we’re focused on celebrating 1.7 million Native youth under the age of 18 that face many challenges. There are many hopeful solutions and we invite the Jenner and Kardashian family to join with the country in learning more during Native American Heritage Month.”

So far there’s been no comment from the Kardashian camp on faux pas. As far as the ring goes, since it’s worth far less than originally reported, returning it might not be that big of an issue anyway.
