How could anyone dare take on the challenge of bringing Marilyn Monroe back to the silver screen? Director Simon Curtis did it without a doubt in his mind.
“Watching Michelle become Marilyn was by far the greatest experiences of my career,” says director Simon Curtis of working on My Week with Marilyn. The film, starring Michelle Williams, is about a 1956 trip Marilyn Monroe took to England to shoot a movie.

The story centers around a young British film intern who gets a job on the set of Monroe’s movie. He learns a little about filmmaking and a lot about love as he strikes up an uncanny love affair with the famed actress.
Curtis has directed other period films like David Copperfield and The Trials of Oz as well as a long list of TV mini-series such as the BBC adaptation The Virgin Queen, but nothing of this pop culture magnitude until now. He had a lot riding on the fact that his Marilyn has to look exactly like the real Marilyn — or what audiences expect her to look like — or he was out of a job.
The question is, did he pull it off? The film debuts Nov. 23, starring Williams as Marilyn Monroe, along with Judi Dench, Julia Ormond, Kenneth Branagh, Dominic Cooper and Eddie Redmayne.
SheKnows sat down with Curtis to find out how he transformed one actress into another and then fell into a magic of it all… just a little bit.
