Rihanna has upset French censors with the release of another suggestive music video. The video for her single “We Found Love” is too sexy for France.
Sultry songstress Rihanna routinely comes under fire for her raunchy performances and colorful lyrics — now, her newest video has proven too sexy for the French!
The controversial vid for “We Found Love” — the lead single from the singer’s new album, Talk That Talk — has been banned from daytime TV in France. Censors in Europe red-flagged the promo over the weekend, citing the depiction of “self-destructive behavior” and scenes of “pronounced suggestive” content among the footage. Per the ruling, the mini-movie is now only to be broadcast on French television stations after 10 p.m.
The “We Found Love” video explores the destructive relationship between a young couple, played by the Barbadian beauty and hunky Irish model Dudley O’Shaughnessy. If the theme sounds familiar, it should. The envelope-pushing clip has drawn comparisons to Rihanna’s own tumultuous romance with her abusive former boyfriend, R&B crooner Chris Brown. Brown famously pleaded guilty to assaulting the “Take a Bow” singer during a Grammy weekend altercation in February 2009. (These days, Chris spends most of his time TwitPicing X-rated images of his privates and ranting about the perils of the “biased media,” but we’ll discuss that at length some other time. )
Rihanna, 23, managed to make headlines during the making of the promo, too. Remember the time she pissed off that farmer in Belfast? In September, devout Christian Alan Graham kicked Rihanna and her film crew off his field when the star dared to remove her top while taping a scene for “We Found Love.” Apparently, soft porn wasn’t exactly what Graham had in mind when he allowed his property to be used in the production.
“If someone wants to borrow my field and things become inappropriate, then I say, ‘Enough is enough.’ I wish no ill will against Rihanna and her friends. Perhaps they could acquaint themselves with a greater God.”

Rihanna’s no stranger to having her videos banned, censored and covered in Caution tape. In February, her “S&M” promo — in which the singer is seen covered in latex, tying a man to a bed and sucking a banana — was deemed too raunchy for broadcast in 11 countries. Despite her penchant for prompting controversy, Rihanna says she’s proud of her work on “We Found Love.”
“We’ve never done a video like this before. This is probably one of the deepest videos I’ve ever done. It’s all about love and love being like a drug. You definitely get that from this. The good feeling of it and the dangers of it. That’s what this video is about,” the Grammy winner told fans in a Twitter posting last month.
