Actresses vie for role in Les Miserables movie

Scarlett Johansson, Taylor Swift and Lea Michele are battling Evan Rachel Wood for the role of Eponine in next year’s Les Miserables movie. Which starlet will win the coveted role?

Four of the biggest names in entertainment are duking it out for one of Hollywood’s most coveted roles.

Eponine will be one of the big female roles in next year’s big screen adaptation of the Broadway musical Les Miserables. Naturally, several notable actresses are competing for the role. Golden Globe nominee Scarlett Johansson and cute-as-a-button country singer Taylor Swift have both auditioned for the part. But so have Broadway alum Lea Michele and Evan Rachel Wood of Thirteen infamy.

With at least four qualified ladies vying for the same role, Les Mis director Tom Hooper — the man behind the camera on last year’s big Oscar darling The King’s Speech — is having trouble deciding which starlet to cast.

Oy! Sounds like quite the pickle.

Anne Hathaway, Hugh Jackman to star in Les Miserables movie >>

“Each star has her own magic ingredient for the musical based on Victor Hugo’s novel,” a source close to the production blabs.

“Scarlett brings acting ability and she can really sing,” the source reveals, adding that Lea “knocked it out of the park” during her audition. Evan “brings her indie cred. And Taylor (who made her acting debut in the 2010 ensemble comedy Valentine’s Day) “has a huge pop fanbase,” notes the insider.

The starlet who lands the Eponine role will join several cast members already confirmed for the feature: Hugh Jackman (Jean Valjean), Russell Crowe (Inspector Javert), Anne Hathaway (Fantine), Geoffrey Rush and Helena Bonham Carter (as Thenardier and Mme. Thenardier, respectively).

The Les Miserables movie is the adaptation of the hugely-successful stage musical of the same name. Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel and set in 19th-century France, the plot follows paroled prisoner Jean Valjean as he seeks redemption.

Les Miserables opens in theaters Dec. 26, 2012.
