Although many rumours suggest that Selena Gomez is this close to a breakdown, it turns out the singer might be taking time off to deal with lupus.
The recent cancellation of the Asian and Australian legs of her tour prompted several media outlets to speculate that Selena Gomez is on the precipice of a breakdown and will be subsequently seeking aid at a rehab any day now. But new reports suggest the 21-year-old singer took the time off to deal with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus).
Per Popdust, Gomez was diagnosed with the disease a few years ago and has been suffering from flare-ups (symptomatic periods of illness, followed by remission) recently, causing fatigue, facial swelling, headaches and even joint pain.

“Selena has been going full throttle the past few years and her Lupus is really catching up with her right now,” a source told Popdust. “She knows that she needs to take some time to address the disease and look after herself better if she wants to live a full and healthy life.”
Lupus is an autoimmune disease that attacks different cells and tissues in the body. The illness is quite unpredictable and has no cure. If this rumour is indeed true, we’re glad Gomez is taking time off to rest. It might be small comfort, but Selena is definitely not alone even in the celebrity world in having this illness. Although lupus most often affects women of teenage years and onward, it can actually occur at any age. Snoop Dogg’s daughter, Cori, first showed symptoms of the disease at the tender age of 6. She is now taking appropriate medication and leads a healthy lifestyle.

Despite many rumours about the origins of Seal‘s facial scars, they are actually the result of discoid lupus erythematosus, which mostly affects the skin from the neck up. People with discoid lupus are often very sensitive to sun exposure and can suffer from hair loss. Seal seems to be keeping things under control and looks fantastic!

Toni Braxton admitted that lupus runs in her family and has been hospitalized several times in the past few years from complications related to the disease. The singer is taking medication to deal with the illness and seems to be doing great right now.
So whether Selena does have lupus, she will be just fine as long as she takes care of herself!
