Learning to love your body

With society’s focus on virtually unattainable beauty, loving your body as it is can sometimes seem impossible. Don’t let the media get you down. Instead, take the time to give your body a little love and celebrate it for being the beautiful creation it is!

View your body the way your loved ones do

All too often, those things we are most self-conscious about are precisely the things our loved ones love most about us. If you’re ever at a loss when trying to look at your body in a positive light, ask someone close to you what about you that person finds most attractive. Chances are you’ll see yourself and your body in a whole new way!

Accept the things you cannot change

Nothing is more important when it comes to body image than accepting your body for what it is. Every person’s body is different, and though diet and exercise can certainly alter its shape in some ways, there will always be parts that are simply meant to be a certain way. Sometimes no amount of slimming down or lifting weights will get a certain part of your body to look exactly as you see it on someone else in a magazine, but that’s OK. It’s important to celebrate your body for what it is — a collage of heredity and life experience — and learn to love what you have been given.

Think of what your body is capable of

Without your legs, you wouldn’t be able to walk down the street to visit a friend. Without your arms, you wouldn’t be able to reach for your favourite book at the library. And without your tush, it would hurt a whole lot to sit down on a sturdy chair. Sure, there may be times when you wish parts of you were a little bigger or a little smaller; that’s completely normal. But you need to look at your body and thank it for all that it does for you. It supports you in your day-to-day activities and gets you where you need to be with relatively little complaint, and that is something to be truly thankful for.

Look at yourself and smile

Taking the time to crack a smile can instantly perk you up. And doing so while you take a peek at yourself in the mirror just might make you see how beautiful you really are. Smile at that scar you got from tree climbing all those years ago, and grin at that quirky dimple on your belly, because they’re with you for the long haul, and there’s nothing wrong with that!
