How to Make a Unicorn Cake in 13 Simple Steps

Unicorns have long been our fantasy creatures of choice, and while it may seem the mythical beasts were everywhere last year, they continue to trend. From cereal and birthday cakes to hair styles, unicorns are aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. And what better way to celebrate and embrace your love for unicorns than with a cake?

All you need are two lame-old normal cake pans and some elbow grease (and a little frosting) to transform your batter into magic.

How to make a unicorn cake

Ingredients:

  • 1 (9-inch) round cake
  • 1 (9-by-9-inch) square cake
  • White frosting (lots of frosting)
  • Rainbow-colored candies
  • Tubes of frosting (black and rainbow colors)

Directions:

  1. Remove the cakes from the pans.
  2. Level the cakes with a serrated knife.
  3. Take the round cake, and cut a 2-inch strip. The large piece left over will be the head.
  4. Trim a 1-inch piece of the circle cake, creating a square edge where you already cut the cake.
  5. Take the square cake, and cut a 4-inch strip.
  6. Take the 4-inch piece of cake, and cut it in half to have 2 (4-by-4-1/2-inch) pieces.
  7. Trim the corners of 1 side of the 4-by-4-1/2-inch piece to create the snout.
  8. Using the edge of the round pan, cut a rounded edge 2/3 of the way down on the 5-by-9-inch piece of cake to create the neck.
  9. Cut the unicorn horn out of the remaining square cake piece.
  10. Use frosting to start gluing together the pieces of cake.
  11. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  12. Frost again.
  13. Decorate.
