What is Feng Shui?

The key concept in feng shui is balance, with a heavy emphasis on the items in a room. “[Your] stuff really does say a lot about you —  where you are at in your life and what, if any, blocks you may be having in moving forward,” explains designer, author and feng shui expert DeAnna Radaj of Bante Design LLC.

1Clear the clutter

To tackle energy-blocking clutter, Radaj says, “There are three questions you need to ask yourself: Do I use it? Do I need it? Do I love it?” If you answered “no” to any of these questions, the item needs to go. But the purpose of clearing clutter is to reduce the anxious feeling it gives you, so don’t overwhelm yourself; take it one project at a time.

2Create a welcoming entryway

To use feng shui for your entryway, lay down a new welcome mat to invite positive energy into your home, as well as keep muddy shoes and boots at bay. You’ll also want to place wind chimes and live green plants in the entryway — they’ll not only remind you of spring but help filter any negative energy.

3Establish positive chi (energy) in your kitchen

For kitchens where stoves face a wall, hanging a mirror above the stove will symbolically show abundance in your life areas of health and wealth. Then clean out the refrigerator, freezer and cupboards to make way for positive energy.

4Promote sleep in bedrooms

Spring clean your bedrooms by clearing the clutter to encourage healthy chi and aid in a good night’s sleep. That includes cleaning out your closet, under the bed and moving any work items and televisions out of your boudoir.

5Empty and organize closets

Give everything in your closet a deep spring cleaning, including emptying it of all the contents, wiping down walls and baseboards and vacuuming the floor. Then give your clothes the clutter test and move non-clothing items, such as holiday decorations, to a separate space.

6Make your windows sparkle

Grab a rag and give your windows a ton of elbow grease. Letting natural light in welcomes tons of positive energy into your abode, especially as the spring sun warms up the world.

7Look for hidden clutter

Be sure to give your entire house a once-over, remembering to scope out cupboards, cabinets, attics, garages, under decks and the yard. Clutter and dirt, no matter how well it’s hidden, can have an affect on the energy in your home.

Having trouble finding how to use feng shui techniques into your home? Don’t be afraid to enlist the help of a professional. “Contact a feng shui consultant that you resonate with,” offers Radaj. “If you aren’t comfortable with their suggestions, do not do it, and find someone else to work with.” The goal is to create more chi and positive energy in your home, so your comfort level is important. And, before you know it, your domicile will be both balanced and clean when you spring clean using feng shui!
