Avoiding the cliche: Glamorous takes on traditional decor

by

You’re a glamour girl and proud of it, so don’t let tradition stand in the way of your personal style. Forget the ho ho hum and go for holiday decorating that brings the bling. These decorating tips show you how to glam up your home for the holidays.

White artificial Christmas tree

Faux and fabulous

Skip the trip to the tree lot this year, and go for something a little glitzier. A white faux tree is the perfect canvas for a super-glam holiday decorating statement.

Lily Gahagan of interior design website Houzz.com suggests using a colorful faux tree . “While I love the smell of a real tree, I’m also a big fan of faux Christmas trees in pink, white or other non-traditional colors. If you’re going to go for a fake, you might as well turn it into an over-the-top style statement! Try decorating it with bulbs and lights in a similar hue to really up the kitschy fun.”

Sparkling tablescape

Your mom may have gotten out the Spode dishes every year, but you’re looking for something a little less traditional. Add glamour to your holiday table by setting your table with clear glass plates, a centerpiece of glittered silver ornaments on mirrors, and plenty of candles to reflect the sparkle. Use stick-on crystals from the craft store to add sparkle to your glassware.

Peacock palette

We love the colors used in the Festive Peacock holiday party, created by Jennifer Sbranti of Hostess with the Mostess. From the bright colors to the individual peacock feather tucked in each napkin, the party screams glamour. Gahagan of Houzz.com is also a fan of a peacock-themed palette. “Of course, classic red and green will always be in style,” she says. “But why not shake it up a bit? I’d pick one traditional color and branch out from there. For example, take a traditional green and add blues and purples for a peacock-themed palette. By using at least one classic color you’ve used in years past, you won’t need to invest in a whole new set of decorations.”

Festival of lights

Add some glitz to Hanukkah by turning it into a true Festival of Lights. Take the glow beyond the menorah and fill your home with candles and fairy lights. If you really want to go non-traditional, you may also want to get a Hanukkah tree. A white artificial tree with blue ornaments or a blue tree with white lights will give you a beautiful spot to stash gifts for all eight nights.
