Hollywood Goes Green: Salma Hayek

Just when you didn’t think you could hear more about how “green” Hollywood is, we’re bringing you the Hollywood Goes Green series. Sure, we sometimes scratch our heads wondering how celebs who live in 20,000-square-foot homes, charter private jets and own 10 vacation compounds call themselves green because they drive a Prius. But as it turns out, being green means more than using less electricity and carpooling. Check out our weekly pick for the top green celebrities in Hollywood. This week, we focus on Salma Hayek.

Salma Hayek is beautiful, talented and socially conscious. Hayek has always been active in charities and human rights groups, but she also cares about Mother Earth. In fact, her awareness has only increased since becoming a mother herself.

“I get a bigger fear of what kind of world she’s going to live in. Is she going to run out of water? What kind of water is she going to drink? It’s really scary and it’s not that far away if we don’t do something about it,” Hayek once said about the future daughter Valentina Paloma Pinault might face.

Often, a celebrity’s simple presence at an event can bring awareness to the cause. In Salma Hayek’s case, she took it a step further and participated in an event to raise money for conservation. Hayek co-hosted the second annual Bid to Save the Earth, which raised funds for the Natural Resources Defense Council, Oceana, the Central Park Conservancy and Conservation International. The initial event raised $1.4 million, but fundraising continues through the fall.

Global Green is an environmental movement with a mission “to foster a global value change toward a sustainable and secure future.” Along with other green celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio, Salma Hayek has served on the Global Green board.

the little things that add up

It doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, but Salma Hayek has reportedly installed solar panels on her Los Angeles home. Solar panels are very environmentally sound — in fact, solar energy offsets up to 1,500 pounds of sulfur dioxide, 830 pounds of nitrogen oxides and 217,000 pounds of carbon dioxide per year per kilowatt.

And of course, the standard Hollywood “green” act: Hayek also drives (or drove!) a hybrid car.
