Edema...
Edema is fluid retention. It's common during pregnancy and causes your body tissues to puff up. You may look and feel bloated. Ankle, foot and leg swelling are very common during pregnancy; often caused by excessive heat or prolonged standing. Even if you're swelling, you still need to drink plenty of fluids -- cutting fluids will not help reduce swelling and can actually make it worse. If you notice extra puffiness in your face or fingers mention it to your care provider as it could be a sign that your kidneys aren't handling the pregnancy well.
You may have heard the term preeclampsia which is related to but not the same as basic edema. To learn more about preeclampsia read this article. During times other than pregnancy, edema can be an indication of real trouble. If you notice unusual swelling or puffiness and you aren't pregnant talk to your care provider as soon as possible.
