Belly Dancing...

51zgmx8dxtl_aa240_.jpgThe Wall Street Journal currently is running a great article about how belly dancing can be a relaxing and comfort inducing technique to use during labor. Anthropologist, (and one of my favorite pregnancy/birth authors ever) Sheila Kitzinger, says that belly dancing originated as a childbirth ritual.

The Journal reports that the first ever prenatal belly dancing DVD was released last year. I went in search of this DVD and found it. It's called Prenatal Bellydance and it looks pretty slick. Here's what the Journal is reporting:

"Pregnant women might find comfort in belly dancing by slowly using hip circles, crescents and figure eights during early labor. The dance movements might progress to include a "rocking of the pelvis from side to side" to help position the fetus correctly and relax the pelvic floor... During the final, pushing phase of labor, full body undulations can help move the fetus into the birth canal."

Experts quoted in the article agree that belly dancing, when done cautiously (as any exercise during pregnancy should be) is perfectly safe for both mama and baby.
