There are so many obvious baby hazards around your home that often baby proofing seems like good old basic common sense. However, there are three common and major hidden hazards that all parents should be on the look out for. Strings: Strings are common around a house. Many people actually still make baby clothing with all sorts of strings such as drawstrings and ribbons. Always cut these out of or off of baby clothing. Some baby toys come with strings as well. If your baby has a fun pull along toy only allow her to use it when you can be right there with her. If you have older kids make sure items like yo-yo's are up and out of baby's reach. Same for sewing projects and other crafts that come with strings.
Balloons: Balloons not blown up or broken are extremely dangerous choking hazards for babies and toddlers. However even blown up balloons pose a risk. I knew one mama who had a young baby -- he was playing with a balloon and it popped right in his face bruising his nose and knocking out two of his baby teeth. Babies are tiny and it doesn't take much force to do damage to their bodies. To keep it perfectly safe just make it a rule that babies don't get balloons. Plastic bags: After shopping you may set plastic bags down on the floor or keep them in a drawer that pulls out. Plastic bags are never safe to have around a baby. If you throw away bags and theres a chance your baby might sneak into the trash tie knots in the plastic bags before throwing them away.
