Are you getting enough folic acid? You really need to make sure that folic acid is on your to-do list. January 7-13 is Folic Acid Awareness Week, so right now is a good time to learn more. Folic acid is one of the B vitamins. We all need it to grow healthy cells. However, for women, folic acid is double important. For women considering pregnancy, folic acid may be the difference between a baby born healthy, and a baby born with health issues. Folic acid taken before and during pregnancy can prevent major birth defects of her baby's brain and spine known as neural tube defects. This week, every week in fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) along with the U.S. Public Health Service are reminding women that 400 micrograms (400 mcg) of synthetic folic acid every day is a must. If you're a woman considering a baby; and even if you're unsure about having children, you need to take folic acid each day. Around half the pregnancies in the U.S are a surprise. That's why even if you aren't considering children, it's important to still take folic acid. Coming up: How to find folic acid and make sure you get enough.
