A new study in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology notes that pregnant women who drink caffeine may double their risk of miscarriage. coffee and pregnancyThe study compared caffeine drinkers to non-caffeine drinkers and women drinking more than two cups of coffee a day had double the miscarriage rate of the non-coffee drinkers. The study points out that 200 milligrams or more per day of caffeine (about two cups of coffee) puts women at risk. Also, some studies have considered the possibility that the chemicals in coffee may be the problem; however, this study showed that sod, chocolate, and other items full of caffeine cause the same double risk of miscarriage which rules out chemicals and makes it obvious that caffeine is the real danger. According to Reuters, "Women who are pregnant or are actively seeking to become pregnant should stop drinking coffee for three months or hopefully throughout pregnancy," said Dr. De-Kun Li of Kaiser Permanente Division of Research, who worked on the study. Li also noted that the safest amount of caffeine during pregnancy is "zero amount."
