There's a new study out that says that small bits of research are possibly suggesting that scheduled breastfeeding may be better than the current popular method of baby centered breastfeeding. breastfeeding scheduleCurrently, most health care providers, breastfeeding advocates, and others who work with breastfeeding mamas note that breastfeeding on demand, or when your baby is hungry, vs. on a pre-set schedule, is best. The new study claims that perhaps schedules are better. Here's what I think. One, I wish I had a nickel for every time some group of scientists gets together and decides on a new "Best" method for breastfeeding mamas and babies. Two, I think that if you're breastfeeding, and your baby is gaining weight as he should, and you're happy, then no matter what schedule you're on, it's the "Best" schedule. Three, I think that from now on, we should listen to what's worked best for the mamas we know and trust, or our own health care provider, instead of having to hear about yet another breastfeeding schedule study on the news. You know, back when my mom was a baby breastfeeding was not the norm, when I was a baby, breastfeeding was sort of in. My mom did breastfeed. In the 80s it fell out of style. In the 90s it came back with baby on demand feeding, but in the late 90s - back to schedules. When I had my son, breastfeeding on demand had come back again - it's what I did because it worked for us. Now it's PC to not hassle mamas about breastfeeding, while some breastfeeding advocates have gone major hard core. I guess I'm hoping for a happy medium. I do think all mama, at least a very high majority can breastfeed with the proper support. I also think that while it's PC to not pressure women, all women should know the facts about breastfeeding, and study after study notes that breastfeeding is best. In the very end, I just want to see healthy happy mamas and babies. Which to me means, what works to solve that issue for you is the best breastfeeding method. Is anyone else frustrated with all the new studies constantly thrown at mamas about breastfeeding? I think I've had about all I can take. Also, I'm curious, who did you get the best breastfeeding advice from?
