You know when your best friend gets a slightly unsettling new haircut? Well, in cases like this, a little white lie isn't going to hurt anyone. However, if you're pregnant, there are some things you should never lie about. Don't lie to your health care provider: Don't lie about your diet. Don't hide things like smoking, drinking alcohol, or drug use from your prenatal provider. Don't lie about symptoms or worries you have. Yeah, you shouldn't smoke while pregnant, but hiding it from your prenatal provider is a bad idea. Your midwife or doctor may have some helpful solutions for your issue, and some things (like smoking) can cause pregnancy, labor, and birth complications so you do need to be honest. Trust me, your care provider has seen it all before, so be honest so you can receive the proper care and help you deserve. Don't lie to your partner: When discussing baby issues such as parenting techniques and the type of support you'd like during labor, be honest. Don't go along with whatever because if you're having a baby with someone, starting out honest is going to be better for the relationship, which will be better for your baby in the long run. Don't lie to yourself: If you're feeling overly sad, anxious, or sicker then you think you should; there could be a real problem. Don't lie to yourself and say, "Oh, I'll be fine" if you don't really feel ok. Call your health care provider. Don't lie about your comfort levels either. If your prenatal care provider is not right for you, change providers. If you're not sure about returning to work after your baby comes don't commit yet - you have time to think. You may not always know what you want during pregnancy, but if your gut is telling you something, don't shrug it off.
