A new poll shows that daddies to be are gaining a fair amount of weight during their partner's pregnancy. According to BBC news, "The average weight gain equated to men putting on around at least two inches around their waist, and a quarter were forced to buy a "paternity" wardrobe." Marketing company Onepoll conducted the poll in which one fifth of the men surveyed said they gained the weight because their partners gave them larger meals, 41% noted it's because there were more snacks around the house, and 25% said they ate more to make their pregnant partner feel better about her own weight gain. Wow - way to blame others right?! The funny thing is that the foods that 'pregnant' dads are eating were reported as pizza, chocolate, chips, and beer. Now, I can see the chocolate thing, but most pregnant women I know don't tend to double stock the beer, you know. Those dads need to blame themselves, not their partners. Onepoll says much the same noting that women do eat a bit more and put on weight (obviously) when pregnant, but males don't need to do the same. Additionally the poll found that only 1/3 of males joined their partners on a post-pregnancy diet. Why it matters... It may seem silly to harp on daddies about their weight gain, but the BBC piece spoke with the Fatherhood Institute who notes that a dad's pregnancy health behavior IS important because research shows that a dad's health behavior can impact their partner's health behaviors as well which of course can affect baby health. If you're a daddy to be or a mama with a daddy to be make sure both of you follow responsible pregnancy diet plans!
