A new study published recently in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association reports that how parents act with relation to mealtime can shape how children eat. Not that this is groundbreaking news. Past studies and many parental experiences support this. The new study found that making a child clean their plate may produce a picky eater, and that super tight control of what your child eats may result in a child who overeats. Researchers found a direct correlation between a mother's pressure to eat healthy food and her child's degree of fussiness over said food. Mothers who restricted a child's food were more likely to have children who would overindulge if allowed. Oddly the study also found that children themselves also directed their parents habits. For example, a chubby child or a child who loves to eat may produce parents who restrict more foods, while a thinner, picky eater may influence her parents to encourage more food intake. All in all, it's clear, from this and other studies that parents are hung up, big time about how and what their kids eat. This is wise to a point. Of course you should offer healthy foods. However, when you become that parent who limits or forces food, a child may develop poor eating habits. In my opinion, you should chill out about food. A child who is offered a wide array of food items will make smart choices. Yup, usually even on her own. With my own son we offered LOTS of food freedom and now, at age nine, he eats like a champ. *Source
