Yes, you read that right. My jaw hit the floor, too. A ten year old Romanian girl gave birth to a baby in Spain. The baby's father is 13 years old and apparently is no longer in a "relationship" with the new mom. Um, I didn't even know that a ten year old could be in a relationship. I'm pretty sure that when I was ten, I was still playing with my American Girl dolls. What is even more appalling is that instead of being outraged, horrified, worried, stressed, angry...I could keep going...her family is pleased.
"My daughter is well, as is the little girl – who is very fine and pretty. She is very happy with her daughter," the baby's Romanian grandmother, Olimpia, told Spanish journalists. "This is not a drama, it is a cause for happiness. At this age we marry in Romania. It is normal amongst we Gypsies." (Source: Guardian)
When she says, "as is the little girl," I become confused b/c I think of the ten year old who gave birth as "the little girl." Taking cultural norms and differences into account -- because I'm well aware that the way we do things here in the United States isn't always the right way -- I can't find this acceptable. While this particular new mom was reported to be in good health, a ten year old girl's body, even if she has gone into puberty early, is not designed to carry a baby and give birth. Furthermore, a baby born to such a young mother is at high risk for being premature. How do you feel about a child so young having a baby? Photo credit: Satanoid
