In disturbing news, a daycare working in Louisiana has been accused of biting a five month old baby. Apparently, if you bite a baby in Louisiana, the crime is "cruelty to a juvenile." Initially, the woman said that she was playing with the baby and accidentally bit him but later said that the baby wouldn't stop crying and she became overwhelmed. So she bit him (?!). The report says that the woman who was accused of biting the baby had called the police in November and reported that her own baby had been bit on the ear. When questioned about it, she said she did not bite her child and didn't know who did. Disturbing, right? I can't imagine picking my child up from daycare and finding a bite mark on his cheek. A google search turns up disturbing stories - some daycare workers do experience burnout and as a result, (very few) workers act out. While uncommon, daycare workers have shaken babies, physically abused children and drugged them to sleep. I would guess that most daycare providers are kind and care about the children they watch. Furthermore, it's never a parent's fault when a daycare worker hurts a child. However, use this story as a reminder to always be aware of the workers at your child's daycare center. If you have any gut feelings, follow them.
