Need another reason not to stress during pregnancy? A recent study linked the number of stressful events an expectant mom experiences during pregnancy with her child's future behavior. Are you starting to stress about stressing?!?! The study, published in Development and Psychology, found that there is a link between increased behavioral problems and the number of stressful events an expecting woman experiences. Stressful events include:
  • Difficult pregnancy
  • Financial problems
  • Relationship problems
  • Issues with other children
  • Job loss
  • Serious events such as a death in the family
The study found that the number of stresses mattered more than the type of stress.
"What we have found is that it is the overall number of stresses that is most related to child behaviour outcomes," Dr Robinson [lead author and Registered Psychologist] said. "Two or fewer stresses during pregnancy are not associated with poor child behavioural development, but as the number of stresses increase to three or more, then the risks of more difficult child behaviour increase."
Study Details:
  • Data from a study in Western Australia
  • 3,000 pregnant women
  • Noted life stress events at 18 and 34 weeks
  • Children followed up with at 2, 5, 8, 10 and 14 years
  • 37.2% of women experiences more than two stressful events
  • 7.6% experienced more than 6 stressful events
The bottom line is that women need support during pregnancy, according to the study author. However, remember that love conquers all -- even if a woman experiences stress during her pregnancy that affects her baby's cognitive development, a study showed that a secure attachment negated the effects.
