Is it possible for the baby to make a noise before birth -- one that the parents can discern?
The expert answers
A baby's lungs are not inflated while the baby's in the womb -- so there is no mechanism by which he could make a sound.
Fetal circulation occurs between the mother and the baby via the umbilical cord, so his lungs don't really come into play until he is delivered and takes that first breath. Overall, it's unlikely that any type of noise emitted through the throat and mouth could be discernable.
