So, this new study relates that "Preterm babies fed enriched formula milk in their first weeks consistently outperformed other premature babies in IQ tests." Here's why people are going to get mad - obviously the study promotes formula, not breastfeeding. I've already seen this study being promoted as "Formula is better than breast milk" and it was just released. For pete's sake. However, there's a significant catch.
"Babies were given either standard formula, or a version enriched with extra protein, fat, calcium, phosphorous, iron, zinc, copper and several other micronutrients. Other babies received "bank" breast milk - ie not from their own mothers, while others received a mix of bank milk and formula. Whatever the comparison, the child who had received the enriched formula milk performed better."
Notice that no babies were given breast milk from their own mamas. That, to me, is a significant gap in this study. Why not compare everything? The benefits of this study are that we know to give preterm babies enriched formula. Anything that can help a preterm baby to thrive is helpful in my book. But frankly I wonder why you wouldn't have it be the norm to give any formula fed baby enriched over not. If you have nutrients available, barring allergy, why wouldn't you give that? In any case, I'm hoping the media takes this for what it is, a formula study comparing formulas - not a breastfeeding study comparing breastfeeding to formula, with formula coming out ahead. I bet people will though.
