The American Medical Association (AMA) has done some good work, and some stuff that makes me cringe, however, with their current decision regarding the outlawing of home birth I've lost most of the respect I had left for them. The situation: The AMA wants to make it law that all women give birth in a birthing center or a hospital. For midwives, who are already at risk for prosecution, this proposed legislation puts them at additional risk, and it could very well now put mamas who choose home birth at risk of facing legal consequences. Where do I start? Each woman has the right to have the birth she chooses, not the birth that they AMA chooses for her. There's a time and a place for all types of births. If a woman wants a home birth - great that's her choice. If she's healthy and there are no complications, a homebirth is a safe option, in my opinion (and in the opinions of various studies) safer because there are less chances of interventions. If a woman feels comfortable in a hospital or at a birthing center, than that's her right as well. The fact that the AMA is trying to prepackage women into one birth option is extremely lame and such a step backwards for women's rights. Today, I'll be posting some more links and information about this issue and some links to home birth info. The Big Push for Midwives has responded to this AMA issue - you can read what they have to say here.

My blogging pal, the Crunchy Domestic Goddess has also been blogging this issue. If you visit her post "Home birth is a choice that the AMA wants to outlaw" you can pick up the button shown above to place at your own blog or website that's in support of home birth and women's rights.
