If you are having your baby in a hospital, there are some essentials you should consider taking along. Earplugs - hospitals can be nosy and the last thing you need is noise when you're concentrating on labor or trying to get some rest. A water bottle with spout - some hospitals have extra water bottles, some don't. Take your own. Make sure it has a spout so you can grab a quick drink with no trouble, and walk around to help labor pains, without spilling. Chapstick - all that heavy breathing, and your lips will get dry. One thing; during labor your sense of smell can be affected and cherry blast may make you crazed, so be sure to take unscented. A really lame ugly robe - the hospital is no place for nice clothing. You're going to get plenty of water, blood, and other fluids on whatever you're wearing, so don't take your favorite robe; it'll possibly get ruined. I suggest going to a thrift store and getting a bargain robe. A birthing ball - if labor is stalled one little birthing ball might get you through without your nurse suggesting labor inducing drugs. Before the hospital, learn to use your ball, and then take it with you. I've seen labor balls seriously manage a labor that was quickly being threatened with pitocen. This is the number one best labor tool. It also makes a nice alternative chair for your partner if need be.
