Lactation consultants are professionals who have been trained to help new (and experienced) mamas overcome breastfeeding challenges. How do you know if you need a lactation consultant?: If you have breastfeeding questions, concerns or problems with breastfeeding, then a lactation consultant can help. If your baby is not eating or is gaining weight at a reasonable rate or latching on correctly, or you have issues like sore nipples or breast pain, then it's also a good time to call a lactation consultant. What can a lactation consultant do for you: A consultant can teach you how to properly feed your baby, offer milk supply tips, help you learn to use a breast pump, and may specialize in problematic situations such as breastfeeding twins or premature babies. The best thing a lactation consultant will do is help you feel more confident about your breastfeeding skills, which means you're more likely to breastfeed longer. Find a lactation consultant: Often hospitals offer a consultation with a lactation consultant as part of the labor and birth package. If it's not offered to you, ask. Even if you don't need one right after your baby is born, you can always call and ask your hospital or your health care provider about a referral. You can also look up lactation consultants at The International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA). Sometimes your insurance will cover lactation consultant visits and sometimes not - if you can't afford a lactation consultant, you can contact La Leche League or WIC to learn where you can get free breastfeeding support and advice.
