As your baby reaches toward toddler age, he'll decide that making choices is exciting. For your little one, being able to make choices is a big development step, so this is exciting for you and him. However, toddlers are easily overwhelmed, and may have trouble choosing between many items. If you feel the need to prove this point take out six shirts and see how fast your toddler gets dressed - you may never get out of the house. A better idea is to offer only two choices. For example, "Jack, do you want the cheese crackers or the graham cracker?" "The red shoes or black shoes?" "Would you like to play with clay or read a story?" By offering two choices you're allowing your toddler to be independent while not overwhelming him.
