Tax season is pretty much here. If you had a wee babe in 2008, and haven't done the following, you need to get cracking, because that cute bundle can be worth one or more nice tax breaks. Snag your baby a social security number. In case you're tired, and running behind, this is a reminder. Most hospitals provide the paperwork you need to get your baby a SSN, but you may have to send it in. Yup start sorting that pile of paperwork. Without a SSN your baby can't be claimed as an exemption (see below). Add an exemption to your W-4. You really need to do this asap after having a baby. An extra exemption can save you thousands a year. File as head of household this year IF your baby lives with you more than half of the year and you're single, separated, or divorced. Don't let the ex get the bigger tax break if your baby lives with you more. Get more tax tips for parents.
