Many women are shocked to realize that they may still look pregnant even though their baby arrived a month (or months) ago. It's a sad fact of parenthood; not all mamas pop back to their old size immediately. Even if you're breastfeeding, even if you're eating well, you may still look a little preggers. It's not unusual to look about 5 months pregnant at a month postpartum. Yikes right. This happens because your muscles and skin have elastic qualities, so they can stretch during pregnancy, but how fast they stretch back depends on a lot. Your genetics, your overall health, your age, and more can all affect your body's ability to pop back into shape. What you can control: While you can't totally control your body's genetic make-up, you can rev up your body shaping efforts.
  • As soon as your health care provider gives you the ok to exercise start a regular daily walking routine. Walking or other moderate cardio is important to reduce weight and help trim your shape.
  • Do easy abdominal exercises to help re-shape your tummy. I don't mean 100 crunches; try something simple like some toning on your exercise ball.
  • Drink LOTS of water. Water not only flushes your system but also keeps you full and able to control the urge to snack on unhealthy foods.
Don't forget - if you're breastfeeding, don't try dieting. Eat healthy and moderately, but cutting too many calories will affect your breastfeeding efforts and leave you and maybe your baby with nutrient deficits.
