High chairs are such a great invention - imagine if they weren't around? However, while high chairs make life easier, they can also be a safety hazard. Follow these tips for safer baby mealtimes with a high chair.
  • Buy a safe high chair to start with and make sure you fill out the warranty card and send it in. If there's a recall, you'll be contacted.
  • If you buy a used high chair, or inherit a family high chair, make sure all the pieces work, are attached correctly, and that there are no splinters. Check for stability too. Before you use, read Is a used or antique high chair safe to use for our baby?
  • Never EVER walk away from an eating baby - whether in a high chair or not. Your baby can choke in the blink of an eye.
  • Don't leave your baby unattended in his high chair, he could tip it over.
  • To prevent tip overs don't place the chair near a wall or counter (your baby can use either to push off with). Don't place your high chair on anything. It's ok to place a sheet or mat around the base to collect dumped food, but make sure the high chair is settled on a flat hard surface.
  • Always read the directions for the chair and use the child safety straps.
  • Get in the habit of asking your baby to put his arms in the air before you attach the tray. He'll think it's fun, but really this trick prevents trapped fingers.
  • If you purchase a fold-up chair, make sure the chair is locked into place before placing your baby into it.
  • Once your child is too big for his chair, he's more likely to tip it. Read the weight requirements and once your tot reaches the limit, put him in a booster seat.
  • Keep it clean with some quick tips. You won't believe the gross foods that get stuck in these chairs.
