Babies love books and getting started early with reading is smart.
Reading to your baby and even just looking at picture books helps your baby to develop language, learn how stories work (start to finish), and teaches him about colors, shapes, and so much more.
When looking for the best baby and toddler books, stick to books with the following traits:
Durability - babies are hard on books. Look for strong board books and bathtub books, but get some regular ones too for story time with you.
Real and drawn images: Mix it up. Babies like colorful art but they also adore pictures that relate to their world. Some experts suggest sticking to simple illustrations, but my son liked some crazy art books, so I suggest a nice mix of complex and simple images. You'll eventually learn what your own child likes best.
Baby-minded plots: Babies like simple. They're not going to stick around for a complicated story.
Repetition: Every baby and toddler I've ever met adores repetition in a book. They learn what to expect and older toddlers will even start to memorize the words.
Don't forget... Allow your baby or toddler some choice. When you go to the bookstore or library see what your little is drawn to, you may be surprised.
