If you're a new parent, chances are, sleep is hard to come by. That said, you'll be a better new parent if you get some shut-eye, and stay healthy. Lack of sleep is a major reason why folks get sick. Getting rid of interruptions: If you're sleeping during the day, grab some heavy blankets and tack them over the windows to block light and some street noise. You can wear a sleep mask and even earplugs if your partner is on baby duty. You can also try masking sounds of the house and neighborhood by using a white noise machine - which by the way will come in handy later for helping your baby to sleep. Deal with your issues: Mood changes like anxiety and the baby blues can lead to a lack of sleep. If you're feeling down talk to your health care provider right away. Note - dads can get the baby blues too. Stay hydrated and eat on a normal schedule: For sure drink plenty of fluids. If possible make sure you're eating a healthy diet on a somewhat normal schedule. Weird eating habits can affect sleep patterns and dehydration can make you more moody which leads us back to the above issue (baby blues). Learn more: How to catch some ZZZZZ’s
