When it comes to safe sleeping positions, babies placed on their backs are safest. You may have heard that sleeping on the tummy is not that safe for babies, but sleeping on the side is not that good either. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services notes that side sleeping is not effective at reducing SIDS rates. Babies placed on their back are at far less risk of dying from SIDS than babies placed on their side. The problems with side sleeping are further extended because little babies tend to roll from their side to their tummy rather than to their back. If there is a medical reason that your baby must sleep on his side, most professionals recommend that you place your baby's lower arm forward to lessen the chance of him rolling onto his tummy.
