CNN is reporting on a newborn baby boy who was born with his heart outside his chest cavity. Amazingly, while he faces a complex surgery, he's still alive and fighting. The little boy has been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) where his heart has been covered with a synthetic membrane of "Gore-Tex, a waterproof, breathable fabric used in outdoor clothing and medical applications. His heart was then wrapped in a layer of his own skin, to substitute for his missing pericardium, the sac that encloses the heart." The baby, now four-days-old has been fighting severe infection and dehydration and along with the major complication of having a heart outside his chest, he also has a hole in his heart and is thought to have an extremely rare condition called ectopia cordis where the chest fails to close over all or part of the heart. A.K. Bisoi, professor of cardiothoracic surgery says that only five to eight cases of this kind in one million live births occurs and doctors are very surprised that this little one has made it this far. According to CNN, Bisoi was asked about the baby's chances of survival and Bisoi noted, "We are working with hope." Read the whole story.
