Mamas, even if they're trying to have a healthy pregnancy, may be at risk for pregnancy complications simply because they lack the money for proper nutritious food. According to Medical News Today, "Living in a food-insecure household during pregnancy may increase the odds of greater weight gain and pregnancy complications, particularly gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM)." What is a food-insecure household? If you live in a food-insecure household, it's pretty simple. This means that your eating patterns are disrupted at times because you lack money and other resources for food. You and your baby can get food help! If you don't have money for food there are many resources that can help you out. When you eat a healthy pregnancy diet you greatly improve your chances for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Check out the following helpful resources: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC Program) - WIC can offer referrals to health care services and provides food coupons, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support. Pregnant women, new mamas, babies and young children who lack money may all apply for services. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - SNAP helps low-income people and families buy the food they need for good health. You apply for benefits by completing a State application form. Benefits are provided on an electronic card that is used like an ATM card and accepted at most grocery stores. Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations - The FDPIR is a federal program that provides commodity foods to low-income households on Indian reservations, and to Native American families residing in designated areas near reservations and in the State of Oklahoma. NOTE: If you lack money for food, I'm guessing you also lack money for health care. You don't have to go without. The Foundation for Health Coverage Education will connect you with the Health Coverage Eligibility Quiz, State by State Applications, and more. It’s a one stop low-cost to free health care resource that's excellent for pregnant mamas and children.
