Recently I posted that probiotics may be useful for preemies and now new research published in the FASEB Journal by Canadian researchers discusses how a probiotic found in breast milk reduces or eliminates painful cramping in the gut. Great news if you happen to be a crampy baby or a distressed mama. The simple act of breastfeeding really does make for less gassy, less crampy babies - something long considered to be true but not entirely studied. The new research used mice to show that a specific strain of Lactobacillus reuteri decreases the force of muscle contractions in the gut within minutes of exposure. This bacterium can be found in human breast milk. The end result is that increasing the intake of this bacterium may help alleviate symptoms of a wide range of gut disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, functional bowel disorders, and constipation. Of course this makes breast milk even sound appealing to adults but most of us don't have access to breast milk on demand. Your baby however, does. Your breast milk may make for a much more peaceful baby because it may calm your baby's hurt tummy and more gassy moments. Seriously, doesn't breast milk just seem cooler and cooler as time goes on!? *Source
