Cesarean section is the most common major surgical procedure performed in the United States and the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS), among other organizations, not to mention me, are all concerned about the huge increase and ongoing overuse of cesarean section. Not only does having a cesarean pose short- and long-term health risks to both mamas and infants but this is an actual surgical procedure, a fact that I'm worried many mamas-to-be overlook. As a surgical procedure you may end up with a scarred uterus which could in turn pose risks to all your future pregnancies and deliveries. For these reasons, CIMS (and many other medical groups) recommend that "Cesareans be reserved for situations when potential benefits clearly outweigh potential harms." In order to help inform mamas-to-be about this issue, CIMS is offering a brand new resource, The Risks of Cesarean Section Fact Sheet (PDF) which offers very easy and straightforward information about cesareans. There's not a lot of mumbo jumbo in this fact sheet. Even if you're not savvy about medical terms, this fact sheet can help you make important decisions about cesareans. As a bonus, this fact sheet includes an important companion document, “A Checklist for Expectant Mothers to Read During Pregnancy.”This checklist allows you the time to reflect on cesarean information and consider the impact of cesarean surgery on your health and the health of your baby before you go into labor.
