Ectopic pregnancies are serious business if undetected. However, now a new blood screening test may be able to diagnose ectopic pregnancies sooner. An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that develops outside of your uterus, usually in a fallopian tube. An ectopic pregnancy can result in severe lower abdomen pain, vaginal bleeding and if left untreated can result in serious complications such as fallopian tube rupture, massive internal bleeding, later reproductive problems or even death. This new blood test, developed by scientists in the USA, was created to be able to detect if a baby is growing outside of the womb with much higher accuracy than the already standing conventional test available. Normally doctors will perform an exam and ultrasound to identify the problem, but these tests aren't perfect and the embryo is sometimes too small to see in early pregnancy. Additionally, a blood test is normally done, to measure levels of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), but again, this test is not perfect and can take a long time to produce results. The new test looks for four key proteins in the blood. While researchers note that the test is not foolproof, it is highly effective at distinguishing between ectopic and normal pregnancy in confirmed cases. Overall, in studies so far, the new test was able to distinguish between ectopic and normal pregnancy with 99% accuracy. Researcher Dr Mary Rausch, at the Center for Human Reproduction at North Shore Long Island Hospital in New York, says eventually this test may be able to offer same-day result. Early diagnosis means healthier care for women, less pain, immediate treatment and a better chance at protecting future fertility The study and new test were recently announced at the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) conference in Denver.
