A recent study shows that formula feeding doesn't equal anymore sleep for new mamas than breastfeeding. That's positive news for breastfeeding advocates - but how about sleep advocates? How come we don't see more studies like this, "Amazing research shows that new mamas can get more sleep if... [insert miracle cure here]" Sigh. New parents, dads and mamas, but especially mamas simply don't get enough sleep. It's par for the course. Worse, even when new mamas get the chance for some shut-eye, they may find it hard to get to sleep. The situation: Grandma or your best friend has offered to take over baby care for a few hours (or even the night!) so you can get a little rest. You happily jump into bed, but then toss, turn and stay wide awake. WTF? This sucks, but it's not uncommon. Being a parent can key you up and what you need to do is unwind. Try this: Dump your worries - new parents have a lot to worry about on top of already existing worries about basics like home and work. Before laying down to sleep, jot all your concerns down in a journal or notepad. Yes, those concerns will still be there tomorrow, but you won't lay awake all night worrying that you may forget them. Don't be a clock watcher - When Cedar was a baby, I'd wake up in the middle of the night to feed him. As he grew, of course he quit waking for nighttime feedings. Sadly, I didn't. I stayed on that lame wake in the middle of the night schedule. THEN to make it worse, I'd glance at the clock and see that OMG, I only have four... three... two hours left to sleep! That time issue stressed me out and made it hard to get to sleep. What worked was not looking at the clock. If I had no clue about time I'd drift off again quickly. Sounds weird, but I swear this works. Don't look at the clock - get more sleep. Relax with little helpers: Sometimes we all need a little help to relax. Try some easy relaxation techniques before you hit the hay.
