Unless you've been living in a cave, you've likely seen the Internet backlash created by one little essay - Mother Madness. In said essay, Erica Jong pretty much attacks attachment parenting and green living, calling both a prison for mothers - not parents. She's specifically singled mamas out for this. Nice. Among other issue Jong rants about, she calls out AP tactics such as baby wearing, breastfeeding, homemade baby food and much more as nothing more than shackles for today's moms. At first I ignored the piece as just another annoying mama issue, however when she went on to attack environmental correctness, blaming green living as well as AP, for mama woes. I got a lot more angry. What finally took the cake though was her ending statement, "We need to be released from guilt about our children, not further bound by it. We need someone to say: Do the best you can. There are no rules." 100% ironic after she's called out AP parents and eco-advocates as sheep following blindly along a parenting path. I guess her statement is true if you play by her rules. In case you missed Jong's little gem of an essay, here's some more reading to ponder...
